A few blocks away, a little corner bar opened. Earl, the bar's daily ambassador walked in and greeted the owners. They obligingly poured his usual bourbon on the rocks.
As the sun was rising and noon hit, Earl fell to the floor. The owners ran over to help him back up. It was quite common for him to fall over but unusual for it to be so early in the day.
They turned him over, jumping back with horror. A thick, blood colored substance was leaking out of the corner of his mouth. Teardrops of the red liquid fell from his eyes.
"This is just the beginning." He grinned, teeth stained red.
He pulled the woman close as he opened his mouth wide.
A scream was heard in the distance.
The newscaster on TV spoke of summer days ahead with low humidity.
Then another anchor briefly mentioned and new disease affecting trees in Europe, Acute Oak Disease, where the trees actually begin to bleed. Scientists were looking for a cause.
